Illustrative

On the morning of 7 January 2015, a car bomb exploded in front of a police officers' academy in central Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. The blast killed at least 38 people and injured more than 60 others. The area targeted also contains the country's central bank and the Defense Ministry, the latter having been the site of a major bombing in December 2013.

Reports indicated that the bombing targeted a large group of Houthi fighters and civilians who were standing near the academy's entrance. Officials stated that most of the victims were young men waiting to enroll at the academy, along with a number of police cadets. The powerful explosion destroyed parts of nearby buildings, and witnesses described large plumes of smoke rising over the area in the aftermath. Emergency officials struggled to respond to the large number of seriously injured victims and warned at the time that the death toll could rise further.

No group claimed immediate responsibility for the attack, though it was suspected to be the work of Al-Qaeda. The bombing was notable for occurring on the same day as the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, France, an attack that was also allegedly linked to Yemeni al-Qaeda figures.

This attack was described as the third major attack in Yemen in less than a month, following what was reported as the deadliest attack in the country during 2014, and as the second major bombing in that period, after the 2014 Rada' bombings and the 2014 Ibb bombing. These prior incidents formed part of a broader pattern of bombings in Yemen during that period.
