Megiddo Junction bus bombing

On the morning of June 5, 2002, a suicide bomber drove a Renault van loaded with dozens of kilograms of explosives to Highway 65 in northern Israel. At Megiddo Junction, he approached Egged bus number 830, which was traveling from Tel Aviv to Tiberias and carrying numerous passengers, many of them Israeli soldiers. At approximately 7:15 am, the bomber detonated the device near the bus's fuel tank, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. A member of the rescue crew later described how people were thrown from the bus by the force of the explosion, and that rescuers were initially unable to board the burning vehicle due to extreme heat.
The blast killed 17 people in total: 13 Israeli soldiers and four civilians. A further 43 passengers were injured, the majority of them soldiers. One of the civilian victims, Eliyahu Timsit, went unidentified for six months following the attack. The unresolved identity of this "17th victim" prompted an investigation by filmmaker David Ofek, whose inquiry ultimately led to a successful identification. This process became the subject of a 2003 documentary titled The 17th Victim.
The Palestinian Islamist militant organization Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group stated that the attack was carried out by an 18-year-old Palestinian from Jenin who had taken driving lessons four days prior specifically in preparation for the mission. In the aftermath, Israeli forces renewed a siege on Yasser Arafat's compound in Ramallah.
The individual identified as having assembled the car bomb used in the attack was killed by Israeli special forces, drawn from the Sayeret Golani and Egoz units, on November 9 of that year, according to the source material.
