Illustrative

Itaberli Lozano was a 17-year-old born on 13 September 1999 in Cravinhos, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. He attended Fernando Campos Rosas public school and worked as a clerk at a local supermarket, while also working as a freelance photographer in 2016. Itaberli was gay. On the night of 25 December 2016, he had an argument with his 32-year-old mother, Tatiana Lozano Pereira, about his sexual orientation. Disappointed by his family's lack of acceptance, Itaberli decided to move in with his paternal grandmother.

When Itaberli did not return home in the following days, his grandmother reported his disappearance to the authorities, and police began investigating. On 7 January 2017, they found his charred body in Cravinhos. He had been stabbed fatally, and his body was burned afterward.

Investigators grew suspicious of Tatiana because she had not reported her son missing and because of her behavior following his disappearance. When police interrogated her, she confessed to the crime. According to her account, on 29 December 2016 she convinced Itaberli to return home under the pretense of reconciling with him. She had, however, previously hired two men—Miller da Silva Barissa, 18, and Victor Roberto da Silva, 19—to beat her son as punishment for his sexual orientation. After the men assaulted Itaberli, Tatiana asked them to kill him; when they refused, she took a knife and stabbed her son herself, according to police commissioner Helton Tosti Renz. Itaberli's uncle, Darío Rosa, stated that Tatiana had rejected and hated her nephew because he was homosexual.

After the killing, Tatiana enlisted the help of her husband, 30-year-old Alex Pereira, Itaberli's stepfather, to conceal the body. The two transported the body to a remote location and used reeds to burn it.

Tatiana and the two hired men were arrested for the crime, and Alex Pereira was also arrested for his role in concealing the body. Tatiana was held in an all-women's prison in Cajuru, while the men were held in the Santa Rosa do Viterbo prison near Cravinhos. Following trial, all four were convicted. Tatiana was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while the two hired men, Miller da Silva Barissa and Victor Roberto da Silva, were each sentenced to 21 years.
