Killing of Simonetta Cesaroni

Simonetta Cesaroni was a 20-year-old secretary and bookkeeper. On August 7, 1990, she was killed while working in an office on Via Carlo Poma in Rome's Prati district, in the Lazio region. When she did not return home, relatives went to the office and found her there later that night.
The case became widely known in Italy as the delitto di via Poma. Investigators pursued multiple lines of inquiry over the following decades, but none produced a standing conviction. A former boyfriend was convicted at first instance and later acquitted; that acquittal became final in 2014. Because no person's guilt is legally established, no historical suspect is named or assigned a structured role here.
Rome prosecutors renewed investigative work in 2022 after a submission from Simonetta's family. In 2024, prosecutors sought to archive the renewed matter. On December 20, 2024, ANSA and Rai News reported that an investigating judge rejected the request and ordered additional investigative work. The order did not adjudicate anyone's guilt.
Rai's August 7, 2025 anniversary report said new hypotheses and documents were still under examination and no perpetrator had been identified. The status is therefore ongoing as of that dated checkpoint.
