Death of Solange Grabenheimer

UNSOLVED2007Florida, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina3 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

On 10 January 2007, police were called to an apartment on Calle Güemes in Florida, in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they found the body of 21-year-old Solange Grabenheimer. She had been stabbed and strangled. Her body was discovered by her roommate and friend, Lucila Frend, together with Grabenheimer's boyfriend, after Frend became worried when Grabenheimer did not appear at a birthday party and could not be reached.

The prosecutor charged Frend with aggravated murder and sought her arrest, but the arrest warrant was denied on the grounds that Frend's constitutional rights had been violated during a crime-scene reconstruction. Investigators disagreed on key details of the case, including the time of the killing and whether an intruder could have entered through an open balcony door.

Frend pleaded not guilty. Her trial opened on 13 June 2011, with prosecutors seeking a life sentence. On 12 July 2011, a three-judge panel unanimously acquitted her, citing insufficient evidence. The prosecution appealed, but in December 2013 the Court of Cassation upheld the acquittal. In January 2022, the statute of limitations expired, and the killing remains legally unsolved.
