Murder of Sydney Sutherland

Illustrative

Sydney Sutherland, a 25-year-old registered nurse at Unity Health Harris Medical Center in Newport, Arkansas, disappeared on August 19, 2020, while jogging along State Highway 18 between Newport and Grubbs in rural Jackson County. A UPS driver reported the last confirmed sighting of her, on County Road 41, between about 2:30 and 3 p.m. that afternoon. She was reported missing that evening, setting off a large search involving the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Arkansas State Police, the FBI, U.S. Marshals, the Arkansas Department of Correction, and several local police departments. Her cellphone, undamaged, was found the next day roughly a quarter mile from her home.

On August 21, 2020, searchers found a woman's body on rural farmland north of Sutherland's home; the Arkansas State Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed through DNA testing that it was Sutherland and ruled her death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries. That same day, Quake Lewellyn, then 28, of Jonesboro, went to Arkansas State Police headquarters in Newport with his father; after investigators called off a planned polygraph test, he admitted involvement in her death and was arrested. Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas said Lewellyn and Sutherland knew each other — both had attended the same high school — and that Lewellyn had joined a Facebook group organized to search for her.

Lewellyn was charged with capital murder, rape, kidnapping, and abuse of a corpse. At a probable cause hearing, an Arkansas State Police special agent testified that Lewellyn came upon Sutherland walking along County Road 41, turned his truck around, and forced her into the vehicle before driving to nearby farmland, where he raped and killed her and buried her body. Court documents later stated that Lewellyn told investigators he had first struck Sutherland with his pickup truck. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in October 2020.

A court-ordered psychological evaluation conducted at the Arkansas State Hospital in January 2021, requested by Lewellyn's attorneys, found him competent to stand trial and found no evidence of a mental disease or defect at the time of the offense. In July 2021, Circuit Judge Rob Ratton granted a defense motion to move the trial from Jackson County to neighboring Lawrence County, ruling that extensive local publicity — including news coverage, roadside memorials, and a highway overpass named in Sutherland's honor — made it unlikely that an impartial jury could be seated in Jackson County.

The case never reached trial. On October 1, 2021, Lewellyn, then 29, pleaded guilty in a Jackson County courtroom to capital murder and rape, waiving his right to a jury trial. As part of the plea agreement, which prosecutors said Sutherland's family had approved, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty and dismissed the kidnapping and abuse-of-a-corpse charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sutherland's mother, Maggie Sutherland, delivered a victim impact statement in court, telling Lewellyn: "What you took 408 days ago from us we'll never get back."
