Illustrative

On 22 June 1991, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 12-year-old Intan Yusniza Mohamad Yunos, a popular child television host for Angkasapuri Children's Club on Radio Televisyen Malaysia, and her 56-year-old foster mother Haniza Ismail were found dead in a pool of blood at their terrace house in Kampung Seri Budiman, Jalan Kuchai Lama. A neighbour discovered the bodies. Jewellery and money were missing from the home, suggesting a robbery-murder. An autopsy by Dr. Abdul Rahman Yusof of Kuala Lumpur Hospital found that both victims died from blunt-force head injuries — Intan from a shattered skull after five blows, and Haniza from massive brain haemorrhage after two blows. Reports suggested both may have been raped prior to death. Intan was not Haniza's biological child; she had been given up for adoption as an infant by an impoverished birth family and raised in Kuala Lumpur by Haniza and her late husband, a former police officer.

The Royal Malaysia Police classified the case as murder and public rewards were offered by a local newspaper, Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and residents of the victims' neighbourhood. On 1 July 1991, police arrested a 24-year-old unemployed neighbour of the victims, Zainuzzaman Mohamad Jasadi, in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan. Police recovered an iron pipe believed to be the murder weapon along with gold chains and bracelets belonging to Haniza. On 12 July 1991, Zainuzzaman was charged with both murders at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court.

Zainuzzaman's trial began in August 1992 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court before Justice Mokhtar Sidin and a seven-member jury. Prosecution evidence included testimony from R. Mahendran, who said Zainuzzaman sold him a gold chain engraved with Intan's name, and from a witness, Mohamed Fazli, who placed Zainuzzaman near the house at the time of the killings. An investigating officer testified that Zainuzzaman had confessed after arrest, but this confession was ruled inadmissible following a trial-within-a-trial after Zainuzzaman alleged he was abused into confessing. The jury acquitted Zainuzzaman of Haniza's murder by a majority of five to two without calling for his defence, but found a prima facie case on the charge of murdering Intan. In his defence, Zainuzzaman admitted to breaking in to steal jewellery but denied entering Intan's room or beating her. On 17 August 1992, the jury found Zainuzzaman guilty of murdering Intan by a majority of six to one, and Justice Mokhtar Sidin sentenced him to death under Section 302 of the Malaysian Penal Code.

Zainuzzaman's appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Malaysia were both rejected, the Federal Court upholding his conviction and sentence on 30 September 1997. Amnesty International publicly appealed to the Malaysian government to spare Zainuzzaman and another death-row prisoner. A petition for royal pardon to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was also dismissed. Zainuzzaman was hanged at Kajang Prison on 5 October 2001.

In the aftermath, 27 police officers involved in the investigation were commended in November 1991, and six were awarded in 1992. Kuala Lumpur City Hall donated RM10,000 to the next-of-kin of Intan and Haniza. Shelly Zailani, a friend of Intan's from the television station, released a tribute song titled "Untukmu Intan" in 1992. The case continued to be recalled in Malaysian media in subsequent years.
