Nahariya train station suicide bombing

On the morning of September 9, 2001, a suicide bomber entered the Nahariya Railway Station in Nahariya, Israel, with explosives hidden on his body. As a train arrived and soldiers and civilians stepped onto the platform, the bomber moved into the crowd and detonated the device. Three Israeli soldiers who were traveling to their military bases were killed, and 94 people were injured in the blast.
The attack was notable as the first bombing of the Second Intifada carried out by an Arab-Israeli citizen. The Palestinian Islamist militant organization Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.
The bomber was identified as Mohammed Shakur Habeishi, a 48-year-old Israeli-Arab man from Abu Sinan, a small Arab village in northern Israel located about eight miles east of Nahariya. Habeishi, who was born and raised in Israel, had two wives and six children. According to the available account, he became religious in the early 1980s and later became an active member of the Islamic Movement in Israel, eventually cooperating with the military wing of Hamas to carry out the attack. As the bomber died in the attack, no criminal charges were filed and no prosecution took place.
In response to the bombing, Israel launched a counter-terror operation against four targets in the West Bank, including buildings in Ramallah used by the Tanzim militia and a building used by the Fatah movement. No casualties resulted from these Israeli strikes.
