On January 31, 1980, indigenous peasant activists occupying the Spanish Embassy in Guatemala City to protest army violence were killed, along with embassy staff and Guatemalan officials, when police stormed the building and a fire broke out, leaving 37 dead.

In May 2015, 14-year-old Bedelyn Esther Orozco Gómez was beaten and burned to death by a vigilante mob in Río Bravo, Suchitepéquez, Guatemala, after being accused of involvement in the killing of a moto taxi driver.

Around 800 AD, several dozen people dressed in royal garments, including the ruler Kan Maax, were executed and dumped in a cistern at the ancient Maya city of Cancuén in present-day Guatemala, an event associated with the broader collapse of Classic Maya civilization.
