2001 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly car bombing

On the afternoon of Monday, 1 October 2001, three militants belonging to the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed attacked the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislative Assembly complex in Srinagar. The attack began at about 2 pm, roughly an hour after the legislature had closed for the day. One attacker drove a Tata Sumo vehicle loaded with explosives to the main entrance of the complex and detonated it. The other militants then entered the building and attempted to seize control. Security forces engaged the attackers in a gunbattle that lasted several hours, and all three militants were ultimately killed. In total, 38 people were killed in the attack, in addition to the three attackers.
No lawmakers were killed in the assault. At the time, the legislature was meeting in temporary facilities because the main legislative building had recently been damaged by fire, and many senior leaders had already left the premises before the attack occurred. The speaker of the assembly, Abdul Ahad Vakil, was escorted to safety by security personnel during the incident.
Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the attack and identified a Pakistani national, Wajahat Hussain, as the suicide bomber who drove the explosive-laden vehicle.
In the aftermath, India's Foreign Ministry issued a strongly worded statement directed at the government of Pakistan, stating that "India cannot accept such manifestations of hate and terror from across its borders" and that "there is a limit to India's patience." Farooq Abdullah, then chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, publicly mourned the 38 victims of the attack and called for reprisal action against militant training camps in Pakistan, stating that "the time has come to wage a war against Pakistan and to bomb the militant training camps there" and that "we are running out of patience."
