On 4 August 2019, a vehicle collided with three other cars outside the National Cancer Institute Egypt in central Cairo. The collision caused an explosion that killed at least 20 people and injured at least 47 others.
The following day, Egypt's Interior Minister, Mahmoud Tawfik, stated that the car involved in the collision contained explosives and had been intended for use in a terrorist operation elsewhere in the capital. According to Tawfik, the explosives-laden vehicle was en route to carry out an attack in another part of Cairo when the collision and resulting explosion occurred outside the cancer hospital.
Tawfik accused the Hasm Movement of carrying out the bombing. The Hasm Movement denied the allegations.
No individual has been named as charged, convicted, or otherwise formally identified as a defendant in connection with this incident based on available reporting.
