2021 Guangzhou Bombing

On 22 March 2021, a bombing occurred in the city of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, China. A man detonated an explosive device, killing five people—including himself—and injuring five others.

The attack targeted a local government office in Mingjing Village, located in the Panyu District of Guangzhou. Local media reported that this office was responsible for handling land use matters. The area had reportedly been the site of ongoing disputes between residents and local officials, centered on an alleged land-grabbing scheme.

Specifically, officials had allegedly allocated 270 acres (approximately 1.1 square kilometers) of land to developers from Shanghai for a tourism-focused development project. This allocation reportedly resulted in the displacement of families who had been living in the area, which local media linked to tensions preceding the bombing.

The perpetrator died in the explosion along with four other people; five additional individuals were injured. The perpetrator and the other victims are not identified. No one was charged in connection with the incident, as the person responsible for detonating the device died at the scene.
