Illustrative

On the morning of 7 December 2022, at around 8:20 AM local time, a suicide bombing occurred at the Astana Anyar police station in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. A lone male attacker rode a motorcycle to the station, approached officers during morning drills, drew a bladed weapon, charged at the assembled police, and detonated an explosive device. The attacker and one police officer, later identified as Police 2nd Sub-Inspector Sofyan Didu, were killed; the officer died roughly three hours later from his injuries. In total, 11 people were injured, including three police officers. Video of the attack circulated widely online afterward. The front of the police station sustained heavy damage, and the surrounding road was cordoned off by police.

Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated the attacker was affiliated with the Bandung branch of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD). Investigators identified the perpetrator as a Bandung local using the nom de guerre Abu Muslim bin Wahid, a former electrician and previously convicted terrorism offender who had served four years in prison on Nusa Kambangan Island after being arrested in 2017 in Babakan Ciparay, Bandung, and released in 2021. He had been classified "red status" under the National Counter Terrorism Agency's (BNPT) deradicalization program, indicating a continued high risk of radicalism. He had relocated to Sukoharjo, Central Java, around September 2021 with his wife and two children.

Forensic investigation found the explosive was TATP, and later determination indicated a pair of pressure cooker bombs was used, of which only one detonated. A handwritten statement recovered from the perpetrator's motorcycle expressed hostility toward the Indonesian government and police, specifically condemning the newly passed 2022 Bill of the Indonesian Criminal Code, along with an Islamic State flag sticker and a "1515" marking associated with a JAD cell communication code. Handwritten protest pamphlets against the criminal code were also recovered.

Detachment 88 and the Gegana Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the scene, conducting a controlled second explosion around 10:45 AM to dispose of remaining explosives. Investigators pursued the wider network; on 14 December 2022, several JAD safe houses were discovered, and on 21 December 2022, police announced 26 arrests across five provinces linked to JAD and Jemaah Islamiyah, with six directly tied to the Bandung incident. On 27 July 2023, the perpetrator's wife was arrested for allegedly being part of the network and indoctrinating him toward the attack. On 5 August 2023, an alleged bomb maker linked to the network was arrested.

The attack prompted national condemnation from political parties, Islamic organizations including Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, and government officials, along with heightened security at police stations, malls, and public events, including increased security ahead of a high-profile wedding attended by senior officials. BNPT later announced reforms to its deradicalization and monitoring programs.
