On the morning of 7 November 2007, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Jokela High School in the town of Jokela, part of Tuusula, Finland. After missing his first class, he entered the school's ground-floor hallway shortly before 11:40, armed with a semi-automatic .22-calibre pistol. He shot and killed a student in the corridor at 11:42, then fatally shot two more students from a restroom doorway. When the school nurse came to help and called for students to flee, the gunman shot and killed another student, then pursued the nurse and shot her and a further student. Six of the eventual eight victims had been killed within four minutes of the first shot.

Head teacher Helena Kalmi, alerted to the attack, ordered students and staff over the public-address system to barricade themselves inside their classrooms. The gunman continued through the building — firing through a barricaded classroom door, moving to the second floor, where he shot and killed another student, and pouring engine fuel on corridor walls and floors in an apparent attempt to start a fire, which did not ignite. He tried to force entry to the school canteen, firing through its locked glass doors without injuring anyone inside. Leaving the building, he encountered Kalmi, who tried to persuade him to surrender; he shot her seven times in the schoolyard, and she died of her injuries after being found by police. The gunman fired at arriving police officers, who were not hit, before returning inside and shooting himself in the head in a restroom near the canteen at 12:04, roughly twenty-four minutes after the attack began. He was taken to a Helsinki hospital, where he died that evening.

The eight people killed were students Sameli "Same" Nurmi, 17; Mika Petteri Pulkkinen, 17; Ari Juhani Palsanen, 18; Hanna Katariina Laaksonen Kinnunen, 25; Mikko Tapani "Mikkous" Hiltunen, 17; and Ville Valtteri "Viltsi" Heinonen, 16; school nurse Sirkka Anneli Kaarakka, 43; and head teacher Helena Kalmi, 61. A further student was wounded by gunfire, and twelve other people were injured by broken glass or during the evacuation. Police, twelve ambulance units, two rescue units, and a medical helicopter responded to the scene; about 200 students and staff were evacuated to a nearby centre, and the school was fully cleared by mid-afternoon.

In the weeks before the attack, the gunman had joined a Helsinki shooting club, obtained a firearms licence, and bought a pistol and ammunition; a police report later confirmed he held no prior criminal record. Investigators recovered 75 spent casings and 327 unused rounds at the scene, along with a suicide note. A roughly 2,000-page police report on the shooting was released in April 2008.

The attack prompted a national response: flags were flown at half-staff, the government held a moment of silence, and education authorities issued guidance for discussing the tragedy with pupils and parents; the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland opened a crisis centre for those affected. On 9 November 2007, the Finnish government dropped its objection to a European Union directive setting a minimum age of 18 for firearms ownership, though officials said the timing was not a direct consequence of the shooting. A government Commission of Inquiry, announced on 13 November 2007, published its findings in February 2009. It was the second school shooting in Finnish history, after a 1989 attack in which a 14-year-old fatally shot two classmates, and was followed less than a year later by the Kauhajoki school shooting at a Finnish vocational college.
