Lynching of Fred Alexander

On January 15, 1901, a mob in Leavenworth, Kansas, seized Fred Alexander, an African American man and veteran of the Spanish–American War, after he had been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of 19-year-old Pearl Forbes. The mob killed Alexander by burning him alive while he was tied to a metal rail. During the lynching he was also castrated.
A Democratic Party-allied newspaper had been stoking fear of African American men as sexual predators in the period leading up to the killing, contributing to the climate in which the mob violence occurred. Subsequent official investigations into the case disputed whether a rape had actually taken place, and found that only circumstantial evidence had been used to implicate Alexander in the alleged crime against Forbes.
The lynching and its aftermath received wide newspaper coverage at the time, including contemporaneous reporting in national outlets. This case is part of the broader documented history of lynchings in the United States in which allegations of rape were used to justify mob violence against African American men, a pattern noted in related historical scholarship. The Alexander case fits within this pattern, given the disputed nature of the rape allegation and the role of circumstantial evidence.
