Killing of Ang May Hong

UNSOLVED1987Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia3 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

On 12 April 1987, nine-year-old Malaysian schoolgirl Ang May Hong was walking with her 11-year-old brother, Ang Yeow Thian, to buy breakfast at a market near their home in Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur. When her brother returned home briefly due to a stomachache, he asked her to wait for him. Ten minutes later he came back to find her gone. After a roughly three-hour search involving her parents and neighbours, her mother, Yong Yoke Chin, found Ang's naked body in an empty house in a nearby area reportedly frequented by drug users.

Ang's body showed signs of severe violence, and an autopsy determined she had been sexually assaulted before being killed. Based on the number and pattern of bite marks, investigators believed several people may have been involved in the attack.

The Royal Malaysia Police classified the case as murder. Investigators developed a description of a possible suspect — a Chinese man who could reportedly speak Tamil — and speculated the attackers were drug users. Three suspects were arrested, including one man who matched the description and another who was a regular customer at the victim's father's restaurant. Dental impressions were taken from all three and compared against the bite marks on Ang's body, but none matched, and all three were released due to insufficient evidence. A reward, initially RM10,000 and later doubled, was offered for information but did not lead to an arrest.

Shortly after the murder, an anonymous man sent letters to the local press claiming to be one of the perpetrators, describing a group of drug addicts who had attacked and killed young girls. In subsequent letters he said he would surrender only if given immunity and a payment of RM30,000, prompting public backlash; he later retracted his claims, saying he had fabricated the story out of frustration with media coverage. Police were unable to verify or identify the letter writer.

The case prompted significant public reaction in Malaysia, including protests outside the family's bak kut teh shop and the founding of the Citizens Against Rape (CAR) campaign, involving the All Women's Action Society (AWAM), to raise awareness about sexual violence. As of 2007, Malaysian police stated the case remained open, though no suspect has been identified or charged. Ang's family has since said they have largely made peace with the case remaining unresolved. The case continues to be referenced in Malaysian media discussions of unsolved child murders and sexual violence, alongside other cases such as the murders of Nurin Jazlin and Audrey Melissa Bathinathan.
