Murder of Lisa Holm

Lisa Helena Holm, born 7 February 1998, was a 17-year-old from Skövde, Sweden, working a summer job at a cafe in Blomberg, near Källby in Västergötland, within Götene Municipality. On 7 June 2015, at the end of her shift, she sent her father in Skövde a text message at 18:23 saying she was on her way home by moped. When she did not arrive, her father drove to the cafe and found her moped still parked there with the keys in the ignition. He and the cafe's owner searched the cafe and the surrounding area without success, and at 21:47 they reported her missing to police. Officers began a search that included tracking dogs and a nearby barn with several rooms; a glove was later recovered there, but Holm was not found that night.
Over the following days, searchers recovered items belonging to Holm: her cellphone case, receipts, and tickets on 9 June, and, inside the barn on 10 June, a pair of earrings, the license card for her moped, and her house keys. On 10 June the search area was also expanded and the Swedish volunteer organization Missing People joined the effort. On 12 June, Missing People volunteers searching the Martorp estate, a few kilometres from the cafe, were approached by two people who arrived by car and said the area had already been searched; made suspicious, the volunteers alerted police and continued searching, finding a jacket and helmet belonging to Holm. Later that night, her body was found in a workshed near the estate.
A county court found that Holm had been killed by hanging or strangulation. DNA belonging to Nerijus Bilevičius, a Lithuanian citizen born 3 March 1980, was found on pieces of rope, on ten items of Holm's clothing both inside and out, and throughout the crime scene. Investigators noted that Bilevičius had no alibi for the day of the murder, that pornography was found on his computer, and that technical evidence indicated sexual activity at the shed; the court found the motive was sexual in nature. His conduct when Missing People volunteers first arrived at Martorp was seen as an attempt to keep them from searching that area. The court described the crime as especially heinous given Holm's age and the disparity in physical strength between her and Bilevičius, and found that she suffered before she was killed. On 17 November 2015, Bilevičius was sentenced to life imprisonment. His attorney, Björn Hurtig, appealed on 15 April 2016, arguing that another person — possibly Bilevičius's wife — had helped commit the murder and remove Holm's body; the court of appeals declined to grant a new review on 2 May 2016, making the life sentence final.
Bilevičius was ordered held at the high-security Norrtälje Prison in Sweden, an assignment announced on 4 July 2016. He was transferred to a Lithuanian prison in 2017, where an appeal that year reduced his sentence to 15 years before an appellate court in Šiauliai restored the life sentence later the same year. In both Swedish and Lithuanian custody, Bilevičius was repeatedly assaulted by other inmates and required medical treatment, including, on one occasion, being drenched in boiling water. On 3 August 2022, another inmate stabbed him in the neck with an improvised weapon during a walk at Marijampolė Correction House in Lithuania; Bilevičius died while being taken to a hospital.
