The Sainbari incident took place on 17 March 1970 in Bardhaman, West Bengal, against a backdrop of severe political instability. The Second United Front government had been dismissed on 16 March 1970, and left parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist), called for a statewide general strike (bandh) the following day.
The Sain family of Bardhaman were supporters of the Indian National Congress. On the day of the bandh, amid clashes in Bardhaman town, the Sain family residence was attacked, and Malay Sain, Pranab Sain, and Jitendranath Roy were killed. Accounts of exactly how the violence unfolded, and of who was responsible, have long been politically disputed between rival party narratives.
A criminal case, commonly referred to as the Sainbari case, was registered the same day. Charges were framed against a number of accused. The state government also appointed a Commission of Enquiry under retired Judge Tarapada Mukherjee, which submitted its report on 27 July 1970, finding that the local police and administration had been unable to control the crowds. In 1978, Judge R.K. Kar acquitted all 83 people accused in the case; no one has been convicted in connection with the killings.
The case remained politically charged for decades. Congress leaders, including Indira Gandhi, visited the family after the incident, and in 2011 the newly elected Trinamool Congress government formed a further commission of inquiry under retired Justice Arunabha Basu, which, as of available reporting, had not submitted a report.
