Tina Watson, a 26-year-old American on her honeymoon, drowned while scuba diving at the SS Yongala wreck off Queensland, Australia, in October 2003. Her husband, Gabe Watson, was tried in Australia and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, serving prison time; a later Alabama murder prosecution ended in his acquittal by a judge for lack of evidence.

Phyllis Reiger, 22, was strangled by her former boyfriend, prison warder Jack McQuade, in his car in Rockhampton, Queensland in the early hours of 16 January 1935, two days after McQuade married another woman.

On 22 September 1976, William Robert Wilson shot and killed two people and wounded four others at random in Spring Hill, Brisbane, before taking five hostages in a nearby house. He surrendered after an hours-long police standoff and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1980.
