Between late 1827 and October 1828, William Burke and William Hare murdered sixteen people in Edinburgh, selling the bodies to anatomist Robert Knox for dissection. Burke was convicted and hanged; Hare received immunity for testifying; Burke's wife's case was found not proven.

Alexander Montgomerie, 10th Earl of Eglinton, was fatally shot on a beach near his stables at Parkhouse on his Ardrossan estate in Ayrshire on 24 October 1769 by excise officer Mungo Campbell, after a dispute over Campbell's right to carry a gun on the Earl's land. Campbell was tried, convicted, and sentenced to hang, but died by suicide in prison before the execution could take place.

Arlene Fraser, a 33-year-old woman from Elgin, Moray, vanished from her home on 28 April 1998 and was never found. Her husband, Nat Fraser, was convicted of her murder in 2003, had that conviction quashed by the UK Supreme Court in 2011, and was convicted again at a second trial in 2012.

17-year-old Zoe Nelson was killed in Wishaw, Scotland on 22 May 2010, her body burned on a makeshift pyre in nearby woodland. Robert Bayne, who had been involved with both Nelson and her younger sister, was convicted of her murder in March 2011 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of twenty years.

Three men — David Gillespie, 42, Ian Mitchell, 67, and Anthony Coyle, 71 — were killed in a top-floor flat on Dixon Avenue, Crosshill, Glasgow, on 17 October 2004. Edith McAlinden, her son John McAlinden, and his friend Jamie Gray were convicted of the killings, which press dubbed the "House of Blood" murders due to the extent of bloodstaining found at the scene.
