2002 Islamabad Protestant International Church Bombing

On the morning of 17 March 2002, three men entered the Protestant International Church in Islamabad, Pakistan, during a Sunday service and attacked the congregation by throwing several grenades. The church was located in Islamabad's diplomatic enclave, about 400 yards from the United States embassy, and was described as only lightly guarded at the time of the attack.
The bombing killed five people and wounded more than 40 others. Among the dead were two American citizens: Barbara Green, who worked in human resources at the U.S. embassy, and her seventeen-year-old daughter, Kristen Wormsley, a senior at the American school in Islamabad. Barbara Green's husband, Milton Green, a U.S. diplomat who directed the embassy's computer section, was injured in the attack along with the couple's young son. A Pakistani citizen and an Afghan national were also among those killed. A fifth victim, whose body was severely damaged in the blasts, was suspected to be one of the attackers; this individual has never been identified.
The attack appeared to target Americans present in Pakistan as well as the government of then-President Pervez Musharraf, according to available reporting. In response, U.S. President George W. Bush condemned the bombing as "acts of murder that cannot be tolerated by any person of conscience." President Musharraf described it as a "ghastly act of terrorism."
