Overview

On 6 July 2008, at approximately 7:50 pm local time, a suicide bomber detonated explosives near the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) in Islamabad, Pakistan. The blast killed 18 police officers and one civilian. The bomber was reported to be around 30 years old.

Context

The attack took place on the first anniversary of the Pakistani military's siege of Lal Masjid, which had ended in a violent confrontation between security forces and militants occupying the mosque. Thousands of Islamic students gathered in Islamabad that day to mark the anniversary of the siege, and the bombing occurred despite tight security measures in place across the capital. Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who visited the site of the blast, stated that around 12,000 students had attended the rally and that the attack was directed at police.

Authorities and commentators characterized the bombing as a likely revenge attack tied to the anniversary of the siege.

Domestic Reaction

Pakistan's Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sherry Rehman, stated that the government would not tolerate such acts and that those responsible would be held accountable, framing the bombing as an attack against the country and its democracy.

A senior official of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said the group was holding consultations and would issue a statement once instructed by its leadership, while also noting that the Taliban were angered by the earlier military operation against Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid.

International Reaction

Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, condemned the bombing as "a heinous act of cowardice" and extended condolences to victims' families and the Pakistani government and people.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, through spokesperson Michele Montas, urged political forces to unite against terrorism and offered condolences to the victims' families and to the government and people of Pakistan.

The Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA), through its chief Tim May, expressed concern about the risks of holding international sporting events in Pakistan given the prevailing unrest and volatility.
