Assassination of Shinzo Abe

On 8 July 2022, Shinzo Abe, former prime minister of Japan and a sitting member of the House of Representatives, was shot while delivering a campaign speech for a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate outside Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Abe was struck by pellets from an improvised firearm fired by 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, who approached to within several metres despite the presence of security. Abe was airlifted to Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara, where he was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m., roughly five and a half hours after the shooting. Doctors said the cause of death was blood loss after a bullet damaged an artery beneath his collarbone, despite an extensive blood transfusion effort.
Yamagami was arrested at the scene and initially charged with attempted murder, a charge upgraded to murder once Abe's death was confirmed. He told investigators he was motivated by a grudge against the Unification Church (UC), stemming from his mother's donations to the church that led to her bankruptcy in 2002. He said he originally intended to target the church's president but, unable to approach her, instead targeted Abe, whom he viewed as a prominent sympathizer of the organization. Abe, along with his father and grandfather, had longstanding ties to the UC and its affiliated groups, including having sent a video message to a UC-linked rally in 2021.
The assassination triggered intense scrutiny in Japan of the Unification Church's fundraising practices and its political connections to the LDP. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ordered his party to disclose UC ties, reshuffled his cabinet earlier than planned, and saw his cabinet's approval ratings drop by 8–13 percent according to polling. The LDP later announced it would sever ties with the UC and expel members who did not do the same. By the end of 2022, Japan's parliament passed legislation restricting solicitation practices by religious organizations and providing relief mechanisms for victims of "spiritual sales." In October 2023, Japan's education ministry sought a court order to revoke the UC's religious corporation status; a Tokyo court upheld the dissolution order in March 2025, a decision the church appealed and which was upheld by the Tokyo High Court in 2026.
Kishida held a state funeral for Abe on 27 September 2022. Several senior police officials, including the National Police Agency's commissioner general, resigned to take responsibility for security failures. Yamagami's trial began on 28 October 2025 at the Nara District Court, where he pleaded guilty. On 21 January 2026, he was sentenced to life in prison; the presiding judge stated that the Unification Church's influence on Yamagami's upbringing was a remote, not direct, cause of the assassination.
