Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh

Illustrative

On 31 July 2024, Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was killed along with his personal bodyguard and aide, Wasim Abu Shaaban, in Tehran, Iran. Haniyeh had traveled to Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezeshkian the previous day and was staying overnight in a military-run guesthouse—reported by various outlets as located in or near the Sa'dabad Complex or the adjoining Neshat compound, both run by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Early on 31 July, Haniyeh and Abu Shaaban were found dead by medical personnel stationed at the compound. Hamas said Haniyeh had been killed in a "Zionist raid" on his residence; Israel initially declined to comment.

The precise method of the killing was disputed across multiple reports. Accounts ranged from a quadcopter strike, to a missile fired from outside or within Iran, to a remotely detonated explosive device that had allegedly been smuggled into the guesthouse roughly two months earlier and hidden in Haniyeh's room. The IRGC's own investigation concluded that a short-range projectile carrying about 7 kilograms of explosive material had struck the building from outside, and it publicly blamed Israel, alleging U.S. support, while rejecting other accounts as fabricated. In December 2024, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed Israel's responsibility for the killing in remarks referencing Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Hassan Nasrallah.

Iranian authorities launched an investigation into the security breach, resulting in the arrest of more than two dozen people, including senior intelligence and military officials as well as guesthouse staff, and the confiscation of electronic devices and surveillance footage. Analysts described the incident as exposing serious security failures within Iran's protective apparatus for foreign dignitaries.

A funeral for Haniyeh was held on 1 August at Tehran University, led by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, followed by a procession to Azadi Square. His remains were then taken to Qatar, where he was buried in Lusail on 2 August after a ceremony attended by the Qatari Emir, Turkish officials, and representatives of Hamas, Fatah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The killing occurred amid a wider pattern of Israeli operations against Hamas and allied leadership following the 7 October 2023 attacks, including the earlier killing of Hamas deputy Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut and an attempt on Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif. Hours before Haniyeh's death, Israel had also killed senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Iran's Supreme Leader ordered a direct retaliatory strike against Israel, and the killing was cited by Iran, alongside the later killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC General Abbas Nilforoushan, as a reason for a large-scale missile attack on Israel on 1 October 2024. On 6 August 2024, Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as Haniyeh's successor as political leader.
