    Kyoto Animation arson attack

    On 18 July 2019, an arsonist set fire to Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building in Kyoto, Japan, killing 36 people and injuring 34 others in one of the deadliest attacks in Japan since World War II. Shinji Aoba was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in January 2024.

    Assassination of Shinzo Abe

    On 8 July 2022, former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was fatally shot with a homemade firearm while giving a campaign speech in Nara City, Japan. Tetsuya Yamagami was arrested at the scene, later convicted of murder, and sentenced to life in prison in January 2026.

    Shiori Ino, a 21-year-old university student, was fatally stabbed in Okegawa, Saitama, Japan, on 26 October 1999 in a contract killing arranged by her abusive former boyfriend, after police repeatedly declined to act on her stalking reports.

    Paraquat murders

    In 1985, an unidentified person or persons placed herbicide-laced energy drinks in and around vending machines across western and central Japan, killing at least ten to thirteen people and sickening 35 more. No suspect was ever identified, and the case remains unsolved.

    Stabbing of Phoenix Luna by Yuka Takaoka

    In May 2019, Yuka Takaoka stabbed her boyfriend, Phoenix Luna, with a kitchen knife in their Shinjuku, Tokyo apartment after viewing photos on his phone; she was convicted of attempted murder in December 2019 and sentenced to 3½ years in prison.

    Killing of the Hakamada Family (Hakamata Incident)

    In 1966, an executive, his wife, and their two children were found stabbed to death after a fire at their home in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Former boxer Iwao Hakamada was convicted and sentenced to death in 1968 based on a disputed confession and contested physical evidence; after nearly five decades on death row, DNA testing led to his release in 2014 and acquittal in a 2024 retrial.

    Sakatayama double suicide

    In May 1932, a man and woman were found dead atop Mt. Sakata in Ōiso, Japan, in an apparent double suicide by poison; the ensuing media frenzy, a body-snatching incident, and a hit film adaptation were linked by contemporaries and later commentators to a wave of copycat suicides.

    Assassination of Inejirō Asanuma

    On 12 October 1960, Japan Socialist Party chairman Inejirō Asanuma was fatally stabbed with a wakizashi by 17-year-old ultranationalist Otoya Yamaguchi, identified as the assailant, during a televised political debate in Tokyo. Yamaguchi was arrested, confessed, and died by suicide in custody on 2 November 1960.

    Assassination of Ōkubo Toshimichi (Kioichō Incident)

    On May 14, 1878, Ōkubo Toshimichi, Japan's Minister of the Interior, was killed by six former samurai in Kioichō, Tokyo, in an attack that also killed his coachman; all six assailants surrendered the same day and were executed after trial.

    1974 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries bombing

    On 30 August 1974, a bomb planted by the East Asia Anti-Japan Armed Front exploded at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Tokyo headquarters, killing eight people and injuring at least 376 others in what was then Japan's deadliest terrorist attack.
