Unsolved case
Death of Keith Lyon
In May 1967, 12-year-old Keith Lyon was stabbed to death while walking alone on a bridleway near Brighton, England. Despite one of the largest murder investigations in Sussex history, no one has ever been charged, and the case remains unsolved.
Keith Lyon was a 12-year-old schoolboy from the village of Ovingdean, near Brighton, England. He attended Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School and was described as a gifted classical musician. His parents were Valda and Ken Lyon, with his father working as a band leader in Brighton. Keith had a younger brother, Peter, who was 7 years old at the time of the murder.
On Saturday, 6 May 1967, Lyon left his home after 2 pm to walk alone to Woodingdean to buy a geometry set. He was still wearing his school uniform despite it being a Saturday. He walked along a bridleway connecting Ovingdean and Woodingdean, in an area known as Happy Valley. At approximately 3 pm, roughly 45 minutes after leaving home, Lyon was attacked and stabbed to death.
His body was discovered at 4:15 pm by a 16-year-old girl who was walking her dog. The location overlooked the English Channel, above the private girls' school Roedean. The body was found under bushes on a grassy bank and appeared to have been thrown down the hill from the bridleway. The girl ran to Woodingdean to alert police, who cordoned off the area. Lyon had been stabbed 11 times in his front and back. His pockets had been turned out, and his four shillings of pocket money and his keys were missing. Ken Lyon was notified of his son's death later that day while preparing to perform at the Metropole Hotel in Brighton.
A few days after the murder, a steak knife with a white handle was found in the grounds of a school around a mile away. Investigators also found evidence that someone had cleaned blood off themselves at a nearby public toilet; the blood was confirmed to be Lyon's. Two female witnesses reported seeing four boys fighting near bushes on the bridleway on the afternoon of the murder, prior to the body's discovery. A bus driver reported that two youths on his bus to Whitehawk appeared visibly agitated that day.
The resulting investigation has been described as one of the largest ever conducted in Sussex, involving 75,000 house-to-house inquiries, interviews with 2,000 schoolchildren, and fingerprinting of more than 5,000 teenagers in the area. Despite identifying a number of suspects, no charges were ever brought.
In 2002, the murder weapon and other associated items — including a cigarette butt, clothing, and a blood-stained tissue — were rediscovered in the basement of Brighton police station. Two men were subsequently arrested but later released on bail, and after four months police confirmed they were no longer suspects. In 2006, police announced they were seeking a family that had emigrated to Canada with a teenage son shortly after the murder.
