Killing of Iryna Farion

Iryna Farion, a Ukrainian linguist, former lawmaker, and nationalist politician who served as a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada from 2012 to 2014 for the Svoboda party, was shot and killed outside her home in Lviv on 19 July 2024. She was 60 years old at the time of her death.
According to the account reconstructed by investigators, in early July 2024 an 18-year-old man from Dnipro, Viacheslav Zinchenko, allegedly traveled by intercity bus to Lviv and rented at least three separate apartments across the city under false identities, reportedly to reduce suspicion and facilitate movement without detection. In the weeks before the attack, he allegedly purchased disguises — including sunglasses, a panama hat, a fake beard, gloves, and dark clothing — and carried pepper powder, possibly to obscure his scent from tracking dogs. Between approximately 16 and 18 July 2024, he was allegedly seen conducting surveillance near locations Farion frequently visited, including her residence and areas where she typically hailed taxis. Witnesses reported an unfamiliar individual loitering on Masaryk Street in the evenings before the shooting.
On 19 July 2024, at around 19:30 local time, Farion was waiting for a taxi on Tomáš Masaryk Street in Lviv when she was allegedly approached and shot in the temple at close range with what investigators believe was a converted starter pistol firing 9×18 mm "sport" ammunition. The assailant fled on foot, discarding disguises and other items in trash containers around the city; police later recovered a fake beard, sunglasses, a hat, clothing, pepper powder packets, and a shell casing.
The suspect allegedly returned to Dnipro by bus and went into hiding. On 25 July 2024, Ukrainian authorities arrested Zinchenko in Dnipro, roughly 900–1,000 km from Lviv, after tracing his movements through bus passenger lists, CCTV footage, and mobile phone data. He was subsequently charged with premeditated murder under Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine; prosecutors later revised the charges to intentional murder committed out of national intolerance combined with illegal possession of weapons, an offense carrying a possible sentence of up to life imprisonment. Zinchenko has denied direct involvement in the killing.
On 24 July 2024, a Russian group calling itself "National Socialism / White Power" published a manifesto attributed to the person who committed the killing, along with a video purportedly showing the shooting; the manifesto claimed the motive was that Farion had promoted language-based hatred among ethnic Ukrainians.
The trial opened in the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv in July 2025, where Zinchenko pleaded not guilty. Farion's family filed a civil claim seeking ₴15 million in moral damages, stating any award would be donated to Ukraine's Defense Forces. During an August hearing, the court heard a recorded jailhouse conversation in which Zinchenko reportedly attributed his motive to Farion's comments about Russian-speaking Ukrainians; in court he said the remarks were untruthful and made under pressure of questioning. The next substantive hearing was scheduled for 13 February 2026.
