    Murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck

    Joe Van Holsbeeck, a 17-year-old Belgian student, was fatally stabbed during an attempted robbery of his MP3 player in the crowded main hall of Brussels-Central railway station on 12 April 2006, sparking national outcry and a large silent march.

    Wereth 11 Massacre and the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion (United States)

    In December 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, eleven African-American soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion were captured, tortured, and executed by German SS troops near the Belgian hamlet of Wereth, a war crime now known as the Wereth 11 massacre.

    Murder of André Cools

    André Cools, a leading Belgian socialist politician and mayor of Flémalle, was shot dead in Liège on 18 July 1991. A 2003 trial in Liège led to the conviction of two men, who were sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment in January 2004.

    Jewish Museum of Belgium Shooting

    On 24 May 2014, a gunman fatally shot four people at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels in an antisemitic, Islamist terrorist attack — the first carried out in Europe by the Islamic State. French national Mehdi Nemmouche was convicted in March 2019 of the four murders and sentenced to life imprisonment; Nacer Bendrer, who supplied the weapons used in the attack, was convicted as a co-author and sentenced to 15 years.

    Antwerp Diamond Heist (2003)

    Thieves broke into the vault of the Antwerp Diamond Center in Belgium over the weekend of 15–16 February 2003, defeating an array of security systems to force open 109 safe deposit boxes and steal loose diamonds, gold, silver, and other jewelry valued at more than $100 million. Ringleader Leonardo Notarbartolo was arrested five days later and, along with three identified accomplices, was later convicted, though most of the stolen property has never been recovered.

    A 32-year-old gay man was abducted from a bar in Liège, Belgium, beaten, and left to die in a field in April 2012, in what became the first homophobic murder case recognized under Belgian law. Four men were convicted in December 2014.

    Heysel Stadium · 1985

    Heysel Stadium disaster

    Fighting between rival football supporters at Heysel Stadium in Brussels led to a crowd crush and the collapse of a stadium wall on 29 May 1985, killing 39 people and injuring about 600 before that year's European Cup final; Belgian courts later convicted 14 Liverpool fans and a Belgian police captain of manslaughter.
