An unidentified serial killer known as "Zodiac" killed at least five people and wounded two others in Northern California between December 1968 and October 1969, taunting police and press with letters and ciphers. On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were stabbed to death outside Brown's Brentwood, Los Angeles condominium. Brown's ex-husband O. J. Simpson was charged with the murders, led police on a widely televised chase, and was later acquitted at criminal trial but found liable for both deaths in a subsequent civil suit.

Asha Kreimer, a 26-year-old dual US-Australian citizen, vanished on September 21, 2015, after walking away from a cafe restroom in Point Arena, California, shortly after being released from a hospital following a mental health crisis. She has not been found.
UNSOLVEDListenOff Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles, California · 1969
Reet Silvia Jurvetson, a 19-year-old Estonian-Canadian woman, was stabbed to death in November 1969 and left in a ravine off Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles. She remained unidentified for 46 years — known only as "Sherry Doe" and later "Jane Doe 59" — until a DNA match confirmed her identity in 2016. The case remains unsolved; the Los Angeles Police Department's most likely suspect is an unidentified man she had traveled from Canada to meet.

Mitrice Richardson, 24, went missing in September 2009 after being released alone, at night, without her belongings, from a Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff's station following an arrest for an unpaid restaurant bill and marijuana possession. Her remains were found in a Malibu Canyon creek bed eleven months later; her death was not ruled a homicide.

Former professional basketball player Rico Harris disappeared on October 10, 2014 in rural Yolo County, California, while driving from his mother's home in Alhambra to Seattle, where he intended to settle with his girlfriend. His abandoned car was found days later, and despite extensive searches, he has never been located.
