    World Trade Center, South Tower · 2001

    United Airlines Flight 175

    On September 11, 2001, five al-Qaeda hijackers seized United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767 flying from Boston to Los Angeles, killed both pilots, and deliberately crashed the plane into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, killing all 65 people aboard and contributing to the deaths of more than 600 others in the tower.

    Murder of Kathryn Faughey

    Kathryn Faughey, a 56-year-old New York City psychologist, was murdered with a meat cleaver in her Upper East Side office on February 12, 2008, by David Tarloff. After two mistrials, Tarloff was convicted of first-degree murder in 2014 and sentenced to life without parole.

    Rock music manager and real estate broker Linda Stein was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on October 30, 2007; a coroner ruled her death a homicide. Her former personal assistant, Natavia Lowery, was arrested days later and ultimately convicted of the killing.

    1975 Fraunces Tavern Bombing

    A bomb exploded in the entrance vestibule of the Anglers' Club of New York, adjacent to Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan, on January 24, 1975, killing four people and injuring more than 50 others. The FALN, a Puerto Rican paramilitary organization, claimed responsibility; no one has been prosecuted as of 2026.

    Mobil gas station, Coney Island Avenue, Midwood, Brooklyn, New York · 2023

    Killing of O'Shae Sibley

    O'Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old gay dancer and choreographer, was fatally stabbed outside a Brooklyn gas station on July 29, 2023, after he and friends were confronted for playing music and voguing. A 17-year-old, Dmitry Popov, was later charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime and, in 2026, was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime but acquitted of murder.

    Murder of Tessa Majors

    Tessa Majors, an 18-year-old Barnard College freshman, was fatally stabbed during a robbery near Morningside Park in Manhattan on December 11, 2019; three teenagers were later charged, with all three eventually pleading guilty.

    Lexington Avenue explosion

    On July 4, 1914, a bomb being assembled by anarchist and IWW-linked conspirators exploded prematurely in a Harlem apartment at 1626 Lexington Avenue, New York City, killing three plotters and an uninvolved tenant, and injuring about twenty others.

    Murder of Patricia Lonergan

    Patricia Lonergan, heiress to the Lion Brewery fortune, was beaten and strangled in her New York City apartment in October 1943. Her estranged husband, Royal Canadian Air Force pilot Wayne Lonergan, was arrested in Toronto, extradited, and convicted of second-degree murder in a highly publicized 1944 trial.

    Bag murders

    Between 1975 and 1977, dismembered remains of six men were found stuffed in garbage bags floating in the Hudson River near New York City. The victims' identities and the killer were never officially established, though a suspect implicated by a witness was never charged in these deaths.

    Murder of Julio Rivera

    Julio Rivera, a 29-year-old gay Puerto Rican bartender, was beaten and stabbed to death in a Jackson Heights, Queens schoolyard on July 2, 1990, in what the NYPD ultimately determined was an anti-gay hate crime. Three men were charged with murder and manslaughter; the killing galvanized Queens' LGBTQ community into sustained activism.
