Singaporean former police officer Jimmy Chua Chap Seng, held at Pudu Prison in Malaysia on murder and firearms charges, masterminded a six-day hostage siege in October 1986 with five fellow inmates before being executed in 1989 for separate firearms offences without ever being tried for the siege.

In 2013, 15-year-old cosplay enthusiast Ng Yuk Tim went missing in Selangor, Malaysia, and was later found dead in a suitcase; a male acquaintance was convicted of her murder, but had the conviction reduced to manslaughter on appeal.

Malaysian millionaire Yong Boon Cheong, 54, was abducted and fatally stabbed in Johor on 4 July 2014, and his burnt body was found at an oil palm estate the next day. One man was convicted of murder and sentenced to death; a second pleaded guilty to abetting the disposal of the body.

On 1 December 2016, businessman Datuk Ong Teik Kwong was shot dead by his bodyguard, Ja'afar Halid, on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in Penang, Malaysia, on the bodyguard's first day of work. The subsequent shooting also killed two bystanders and injured four others.

Two 22-year-old British medical students, Aidan Brunger and Neil Dalton, were stabbed to death outside a bar in Kuching, Malaysia, on 6 August 2014 while on a hospital placement. Fishmonger Zulkipli Abdullah was convicted of both murders in 2015 and sentenced to death; his conviction and sentence have since been upheld through multiple appeals, including a 2024 re-sentencing bid.
