    Disappearance of ARA San Juan

    The Argentine Navy submarine ARA San Juan disappeared in the South Atlantic on 15 November 2017 during a training exercise, with 44 crew members aboard. Despite a large multinational search, the vessel was not located until 16 November 2018, when the private company Ocean Infinity found its wreck at a depth of 907 metres. All 44 crew were lost.

    San Vicente / Alejandro Korn, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina · 2021

    Disappearance of Tehuel de la Torre

    Tehuel de la Torre, a 21-year-old Argentine trans man, disappeared on 11 March 2021 after leaving his home in San Vicente, Buenos Aires, to meet a man who had offered him work as a waiter. His body has never been found. Luis Alberto Ramos was convicted of aggravated homicide motivated by hatred of gender identity and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024; a co-accused, Oscar Alfredo Montes, faces a separate jury trial.

    Death of Santiago Maldonado

    Santiago Maldonado, an Argentine craftsman, disappeared on 1 August 2017 after Gendarmerie forces dispersed a Mapuche protest in Chubut Province; his body was found in the Chubut River in October 2017, with autopsies concluding death by drowning and hypothermia with no signs of violence, though his family continues to believe he was forcibly disappeared.

    Murder of Cecilia Strzyzowski

    Cecilia Strzyzowski, a 28-year-old woman from Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina, disappeared on 2 June 2023 after being seen entering the home of her partner César Sena. She was later found to have been murdered in a femicide involving Sena and members of his politically influential family, the "Sena Clan." In November 2025, six defendants were convicted of murder while one was acquitted.

    Nahir Galarza was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the December 2017 murder of her 20-year-old boyfriend, Fernando Pastorizzo, in Gualeguaychú, Argentina, in a case that drew intense national and international media attention.

    Murder of Fernando Báez Sosa

    Fernando Báez Sosa, an 18-year-old Argentine law student, was beaten to death outside a nightclub in Villa Gesell on 18 January 2020 by a group of young men. In 2023, all eight tried defendants were convicted of aggravated homicide, with five sentenced to life imprisonment and three to 15 years.

    Killing of Luis Espinoza

    Luis Espinoza, a 31-year-old rural worker, was shot in the back by a police officer in Tucumán, Argentina, in May 2020 after being wrongly suspected of participating in an illegal horse race during COVID-19 lockdown. His body was concealed and later dumped in a ravine in neighboring Catamarca province. Nine people were convicted; convictions and life sentences for the main perpetrators were upheld on appeal in December 2024.

    2006 San Miguel shooting

    On 3 May 2006, a former employee of a bus company in San Miguel, Buenos Aires, Argentina, opened fire on his ex-colleagues during a meeting, killing two and wounding four others before surrendering to police. He was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 32 years in prison.
