Murder of Jennifer Dulos

New Canaan, Connecticut, United States

Jennifer Dulos, a mother of five in New Canaan, Connecticut, disappeared on May 24, 2019, after being attacked at her home; her body has never been found, and she was declared legally dead in 2023. Her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, was charged with her murder but died by suicide in January 2020 before trial, while his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, was convicted in 2024 of related charges.

Murder of Haley Anderson

Oak Street, West Side, Binghamton, New York

Haley Anderson, a 22-year-old nursing student at Binghamton University, was strangled to death on March 8, 2018, by fellow student Orlando Tercero at his off-campus apartment. Tercero fled to Nicaragua, was captured days later, and was convicted of femicide there, receiving a 30-year sentence.

Disappearance of ARA San Juan

South Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Argentina

The Argentine Navy submarine ARA San Juan disappeared in the South Atlantic on 15 November 2017 during a training exercise, with 44 crew members aboard. Despite a large multinational search, the vessel was not located until 16 November 2018, when the private company Ocean Infinity found its wreck at a depth of 907 metres. All 44 crew were lost.

Murder of Sierah Joughin

Delta, Fulton County, Ohio

Sierah Joughin, a 20-year-old Ohio college student, was abducted while bicycling home in Fulton County on July 19, 2016, and found dead three days later. James Dean Worley, a neighbor with a 1990 abduction conviction who was not listed in any offender database, was convicted of her murder in 2018 and sentenced to death, prompting Ohio's Sierah's Law, which created a searchable violent-offender registry.

Golf estate, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

Three members of the van Breda family were killed with an axe at their home on a golf estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in January 2015, while the youngest son was convicted of the murders in 2018 after a lengthy trial.

Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California

Amie Harwick, a Los Angeles marriage and family therapist and author, was strangled and thrown from her third-floor Hollywood Hills balcony on February 15, 2020, by an ex-boyfriend who had a history of stalking her. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2023 and sentenced to life without parole.

Murder of Reeva Steenkamp

Pretoria, South Africa

Model Reeva Steenkamp was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Paralympic and Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius, at his Pretoria home in the early hours of 14 February 2013. After a highly publicized trial, Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide, but South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal later overturned that verdict and convicted him of murder, ultimately sentencing him to 15 years in prison.

Star City, West Virginia (disappearance site); body found in Wayne Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania

Sixteen-year-old Skylar Neese disappeared from her Star City, West Virginia home in July 2012 and was found murdered months later. Two of her high school best friends, Rachel Shoaf and Shelia Eddy, pleaded guilty to killing her in a premeditated stabbing attack.

Allison Baden-Clay, a 43-year-old Brisbane mother of three, was murdered by her husband Gerard Baden-Clay in April 2012; his murder conviction was downgraded on appeal and then restored by the High Court of Australia in 2016.

Ben McDaniel, a 30-year-old diver from Memphis, Tennessee, vanished after entering a cave system at Vortex Spring in the Florida Panhandle on August 18, 2010, and has never been found, despite extensive searches and a Florida death certificate issued in 2013.
