Assassination of Huey Long

Louisiana State Capitol, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

On September 8, 1935, U.S. Senator and former Louisiana Governor Huey Long was shot at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge and died 31 hours later. Carl Weiss, son-in-law of a judge Long had just moved to remove from office, was killed at the scene by Long's bodyguards; the exact circumstances of Long's fatal wound remain disputed.

Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia

Phyllis Reiger, 22, was strangled by her former boyfriend, prison warder Jack McQuade, in his car in Rockhampton, Queensland in the early hours of 16 January 1935, two days after McQuade married another woman.

Assassination of Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro

Santa Beatriz Hippodrome (now Campo de Marte), Santa Beatriz, Lima, Peru

On April 30, 1933, Peruvian President Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro was fatally shot from behind while riding in his open-topped car at the Santa Beatriz Hippodrome in Lima. The gunman, APRA militant Abelardo Mendoza Leyva, was killed at the scene by presidential guards; a Republican Guard member was also killed in the attack.

Between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service studied untreated syphilis in nearly 400 Black men in Macon County, Alabama, without informing them of their diagnosis or providing treatment, and more than 100 died as a result.

Killing of Julia Wallace

29 Wolverton Street, Anfield, Liverpool

Julia Wallace was beaten to death in her Liverpool home in January 1931 after her husband William was lured away by a hoax phone call. He was convicted but the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the verdict months later, and the killing remains officially unsolved.

Killing of Margery Wren

2 Church Road, Ramsgate, Kent

Margery Wren, a 79-year-old former maid and Ramsgate sweetshop owner, was fatally beaten with fire tongs at her shop in September 1930. She survived five days but refused to name her attacker before dying, and despite a police investigation involving Scotland Yard, the case was never solved.
