Killing of Bella Wright

Gartree Road, near Little Stretton, Leicestershire, England

Bella Wright, a 21-year-old factory worker, was shot dead near Little Stretton, Leicestershire, on 5 July 1919 while cycling home. Ronald Light, seen riding with her shortly before her death on a distinctive green bicycle, was tried for her murder in 1920 and acquitted.

Radium Girls

Orange, New Jersey

Beginning in 1917, factory workers who came to be known as the Radium Girls were poisoned after being instructed to shape radium-paint brushes with their lips; the resulting illnesses, deaths, and lawsuits against the United States Radium Corporation and the Radium Dial Company reshaped U.S. occupational health and labor law.

Wonnangatta murders

Wonnangatta Valley, East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia

In late 1917 and 1918, station manager Jim Barclay and cook John Bamford were murdered in the remote Wonnangatta Valley, Victoria, Australia. Both men were shot and their bodies found separately months apart; the case remains unsolved.

Killing of Moshe Barsky

Degania Alef / Menahemia area, Ottoman Palestine

Moshe Barsky, an 18-year-old member of the Degania Alef kibbutz, was shot and killed by Bedouin raiders in 1913 while traveling to obtain medicine for a fellow kibbutznik. His death became a significant symbol in pre-Israeli Zionist history.

Rosenthal murder case

Near Hotel Metropole, 147 West 43rd Street, Manhattan, New York City

Herman Rosenthal, a Manhattan bookmaker who had accused NYPD officers of extorting protection money from his illegal gambling operations, was shot dead outside the Hotel Metropole in July 1912. NYPD Lieutenant Charles Becker and four gunmen were later convicted of ordering and carrying out the murder and were executed at Sing Sing Prison.

Crime of Cuenca

Tresjuncos, Cuenca, Spain

In 1910, a shepherd named José María Grimaldos disappeared from the Spanish village of Tresjuncos; two men were tortured into confessing to his murder and served over 12 years in prison before Grimaldos reappeared alive in 1926, leading Spain's Supreme Court to void their convictions.
