Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student, was strangled and found buried in Leakin Park in February 1999. Her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was convicted of first-degree murder in 2000; the case gained international attention after the 2014 podcast Serial, and Syed's conviction underwent multiple vacaturs, appeals, and reinstatements through 2025.

Martha Moxley, 15, was found bludgeoned and stabbed with a golf club in her family's Greenwich, Connecticut backyard on October 31, 1975. Michael Skakel was convicted of her murder in 2002, but after multiple appeals his conviction was overturned in 2018, and in 2020 prosecutors announced they would not retry him.

Marta Russo, a 22-year-old law student, was fatally shot on the grounds of Sapienza University of Rome in May 1997, in a heavily publicised and contested case that ended in manslaughter convictions.

Rapper Tupac Shakur, 25, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Paradise, Nevada, on September 7, 1996, and died six days later. The case went unsolved for decades until Duane "Keefe D" Davis was indicted and arrested in September 2023 and charged with first-degree murder. On August 31, 2026, a Las Vegas jury convicted Davis of murder with use of a deadly weapon; he is scheduled to be sentenced on October 13, 2026.

Sacramento attorney Larry McNabney was killed in September 2001, authorities determined, by his wife, Elisa McNabney (born Laren Sims), and legal secretary Sarah Dutra, who injected him with a horse tranquilizer. His body was found buried in a Linden, California vineyard in February 2002. Elisa hanged herself in jail before trial; Dutra was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.

On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were stabbed to death outside Brown's Brentwood, Los Angeles condominium. Brown's ex-husband O. J. Simpson was charged with the murders, led police on a widely televised chase, and was later acquitted at criminal trial but found liable for both deaths in a subsequent civil suit.

Girly Chew Hossencofft, a Malaysian-born bank teller living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, disappeared on September 9, 1999, shortly after filing for divorce from her husband Diazien Hossencofft. He and his girlfriend Linda Henning were later convicted of her murder. Her body has never been found.

In 1992, 16-year-old Japanese exchange student Yoshihiro Hattori was fatally shot by homeowner Rodney Peairs in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after Hattori and his host brother mistakenly went to the wrong house for a Halloween party. Peairs was acquitted of manslaughter but later found civilly liable for Hattori's death.

Alberica Filo della Torre, a 42-year-old Roman noblewoman, was beaten and strangled in her locked bedroom at a villa in Olgiata, Rome, on 10 July 1991. The case went unsolved for 20 years until 2011 DNA evidence and a confession led to the conviction of Manuel Winston Reyes, a former domestic employee of the family.
