Killing of Emily Dimmock (the "Camden Town Murder")

Agar Grove (formerly 29 St Paul's Road), Camden Town, London

Sex worker Emily Dimmock was found with her throat cut in her Camden Town home in September 1907; artist Robert Wood was tried for her murder and acquitted after a defence by Edward Marshall Hall.

Murder of Grace Brown

Big Moose Lake, New York

Grace Brown, a 20-year-old factory worker, was murdered by her boyfriend Chester Gillette on Big Moose Lake, New York, in July 1906 after she told him she was pregnant. Gillette was convicted and executed in 1908.

Murders of Thomas and Ann Farrow (Stratton Brothers case)

34 Deptford High Street, Deptford, London

Thomas and Ann Farrow were beaten to death during a robbery at their Deptford paint shop in March 1905. A greasy thumbprint left on the emptied cash box was matched to Alfred Stratton, making this one of the earliest murder convictions in Britain based on fingerprint evidence. Alfred and his brother Albert Stratton were convicted and hanged in May 1905.

Thirteen-year-old Bertha Schippan was stabbed and slashed to death at her family's home in Towitta, South Australia, on the night of 1 January 1902. Her sister Mary was tried for the murder but acquitted, and the case remains unsolved.

Assassination of William McKinley

Temple of Music, Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, New York

President William McKinley was shot twice by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition's Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York, on September 6, 1901, and died of gangrene from the wounds on September 14. Czolgosz was convicted of first-degree murder and executed by electric chair on October 29, 1901.

Breakheart Hill Farm, Saugus, Massachusetts

George E. Bailey was shot and dismembered at Breakheart Hill Farm in Saugus, Massachusetts, in October 1900. His employee, John C. Best, was convicted of the murder and executed in 1902.
