Meredith Hunter, a young Black man, was fatally stabbed by Hells Angels member Alan Passaro at the Altamont Free Concert in California on December 6, 1969; Passaro was tried for murder and acquitted after arguing self-defense.

Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Lorraine Motel, Memphis, Tennessee

On April 4, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray, an escaped convict, pleaded guilty to the murder in 1969 and was sentenced to 99 years, though he later recanted. A 1999 civil jury found Loyd Jowers and unnamed others civilly liable for a conspiracy, a finding the U.S. Department of Justice disputed in 2000 for lack of evidence.

George Lincoln Rockwell, founder of the American Nazi Party, was shot and killed outside a laundromat in Arlington, Virginia, on August 25, 1967. John Patler, an expelled party member, was convicted of first-degree murder in a case built on circumstantial evidence.

Braybrook Street, Shepherd's Bush, London

On 12 August 1966, three London police officers were shot dead in Braybrook Street, Shepherd's Bush, after stopping a car to question its occupants. Harry Roberts, John Duddy and John Witney were convicted of the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Railway underpass near Horbury Lagoon, Wakefield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England

Elsie Frost, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, was fatally stabbed in a railway underpass near Wakefield in 1965; despite a massive manhunt no one was ever convicted, and a 2019 inquest posthumously named Peter Pickering as her killer.

Murder of Lemuel Penn

Broad River Bridge, Georgia State Route 172, Madison County, Georgia

Lemuel Penn, a Black U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and D.C. school administrator, was shot and killed on a Georgia bridge in 1964 while driving home from military training. Cecil Myers and Howard Sims were acquitted of Penn's murder in state court and were later convicted in federal court of a civil-rights conspiracy connected to his killing.

President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the killing but was himself murdered by Jack Ruby two days later, before facing trial.

Murder of Thomas Bates

Thomas Bates, a 46-year-old Birmingham newsagent, was shot dead during an armed robbery of his shop on 2 June 1962. Oswald Grey was convicted of the murder and hanged in November 1962, though he maintained his innocence and questions remain about the sufficiency of the evidence against him.

Assassination of Inejirō Asanuma

Hibiya Public Hall, Tokyo, Japan

On 12 October 1960, Japan Socialist Party chairman Inejirō Asanuma was fatally stabbed with a wakizashi by 17-year-old ultranationalist Otoya Yamaguchi, identified as the assailant, during a televised political debate in Tokyo. Yamaguchi was arrested, confessed, and died by suicide in custody on 2 November 1960.
