Sierah Joughin, a 20-year-old Ohio college student, was abducted while bicycling home in Fulton County on July 19, 2016, and found dead three days later. James Dean Worley, a neighbor with a 1990 abduction conviction who was not listed in any offender database, was convicted of her murder in 2018 and sentenced to death, prompting Ohio's Sierah's Law, which created a searchable violent-offender registry.

Jennifer Dulos, a mother of five in New Canaan, Connecticut, disappeared on May 24, 2019, after being attacked at her home; her body has never been found, and she was declared legally dead in 2023. Her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, was charged with her murder but died by suicide in January 2020 before trial, while his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, was convicted in 2024 of related charges.

Amie Harwick, a Los Angeles marriage and family therapist and author, was strangled and thrown from her third-floor Hollywood Hills balcony on February 15, 2020, by an ex-boyfriend who had a history of stalking her. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2023 and sentenced to life without parole.

On May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy SEAL Team Six killed Osama bin Laden, founder of al-Qaeda and orchestrator of the September 11 attacks, during a CIA-led raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Three other people in the compound were also killed, and bin Laden's body was buried at sea.

Royal Air Force gunner Corrie McKeague disappeared after a night out in Bury St Edmunds in September 2016, and a 2022 inquest concluded he died after climbing into a waste bin that was tipped into a bin lorry, though his remains were never found.
