Girly Chew Hossencofft, a Malaysian-born bank teller living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, disappeared on September 9, 1999, shortly after filing for divorce from her husband Diazien Hossencofft. He and his girlfriend Linda Henning were later convicted of her murder. Her body has never been found.

In September 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been laced with potassium cyanide after leaving the factory. The case remains unsolved as of 2026, though it led to nationwide tamper-resistant packaging reforms and federal anti-tampering laws.

Sacramento attorney Larry McNabney was killed in September 2001, authorities determined, by his wife, Elisa McNabney (born Laren Sims), and legal secretary Sarah Dutra, who injected him with a horse tranquilizer. His body was found buried in a Linden, California vineyard in February 2002. Elisa hanged herself in jail before trial; Dutra was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.

Utah real estate agent Kouri Richins fatally poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, with a lethal dose of fentanyl at their Kamas, Utah, home in March 2022, then published a children's grief book before her 2023 arrest. A jury convicted her in March 2026 of aggravated murder, attempted murder, forgery, and fraud, and she was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

In September 2015, Fox Lake, Illinois police lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was found dead in a marsh in what was initially believed to be a murder by three unknown assailants, triggering a massive manhunt. After a two-month investigation, officials concluded he had staged his death to look like a homicide but had in fact died by suicide after fearing exposure of years of embezzlement and other criminal conduct.

On March 31, 1995, singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was fatally shot at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, by Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques, following a dispute over embezzled funds. Saldívar was convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years to life.

In 1935 Sydney, a captive tiger shark vomited up a tattooed human arm, sparking a murder investigation into the death of James "Jimmy" Smith that led to a suspicious suicide attempt, a second man's unsolved murder, and an acquittal — leaving the case officially unsolved to this day.

Mee Kuen Chong, a Malaysian woman living in Wembley, north London, was murdered in June 2021 by her friend Jemma Mitchell following a dispute over money Chong had promised toward a property renovation. Mitchell disposed of Chong's decapitated body 200 miles away in Devon and was convicted of murder in October 2022, becoming the first woman in the UK to have her sentencing hearing televised.

Andrew Kissel, a real estate developer accused of defrauding a Manhattan co-op board of millions of dollars, was found stabbed to death, bound hand and foot, in the basement of his rented Greenwich, Connecticut estate in April 2006. His chauffeur and the chauffeur's cousin were later convicted in connection with the killing.
