  Murder of Kathleen Grundy and Other Patients by Harold Shipman

  Harold Shipman, a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester, was convicted in January 2000 of murdering 15 patients, including former mayoress Kathleen Grundy, using lethal doses of diamorphine. A subsequent public inquiry concluded he had killed at least 218 patients over roughly 27 years, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in modern history.

  New Orleans, Louisiana, United States · 1910s

  Axeman of New Orleans

  An unidentified attacker killed and injured multiple people—mostly Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans—in and around New Orleans between May 1918 and October 1919, typically breaking in through a chiseled back-door panel and attacking victims with an axe or razor. The case remains unsolved.

  Cleveland Torso Murders

  Between 1935 and 1938, at least twelve people were killed and dismembered in Cleveland, Ohio, with remains left in the Kingsbury Run area; the case remains unsolved despite an investigation once led by Eliot Ness.

  Ipswich serial murders

  Between October and December 2006, five women who worked in prostitution in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, were murdered; Steve Wright was convicted of all five killings in February 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole-life order.

  Robert Pickton Murders

  Robert Pickton, a pig farmer from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, was convicted in December 2007 of second-degree murder in the deaths of six women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Investigators linked him to the deaths of at least 26 women in total, and 20 further first-degree murder charges against him were stayed in 2010.

  Alexander Pichushkin (Chessboard Killer)

  Alexander Pichushkin, a Moscow warehouse worker, was convicted in 2007 of murdering 49 people and attempting to murder three others in and around Bittsa Park between 1992 and 2006, and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

  West Port, Edinburgh, Scotland · 1828

  Burke and Hare murders

  Between late 1827 and October 1828, William Burke and William Hare murdered sixteen people in Edinburgh, selling the bodies to anatomist Robert Knox for dissection. Burke was convicted and hanged; Hare received immunity for testifying; Burke's wife's case was found not proven.

  Orlík Reservoir, South Bohemian Region, Czech Republic · 1991

  Orlík Reservoir Murders

  Between 1991 and 1993, a five-person gang led by Karel Kopáč killed six people around Prague, Rudná, and Liberec, Czech Republic, for money, shooting most victims and dissolving several bodies in lye-filled barrels dumped in the Orlík Reservoir. All five gang members, including principal shooter Ludvík Černý, were convicted in April 1997.

  Zebra murders

  Between October 1973 and April 1974, a group calling itself the "Death Angels" killed at least fifteen white people and wounded eight others in racially motivated attacks across San Francisco, prompting a controversial police manhunt known as Operation Zebra and the eventual conviction of four men.

  Paris, France · 1984

  Killings of Elderly Women in Paris Attributed to Thierry Paulin (1984–1987)

  Between October 1984 and November 1987, at least 18 elderly women were robbed and killed in Paris, mostly in the 18th arrondissement, in a series of attacks French police linked by fingerprint evidence, a survivor's description, and a confession to nightclub performer Thierry Paulin. Paulin died of AIDS-related illness in April 1989 before he could stand trial; his former partner, Jean-Thierry Mathurin, was later convicted as an accomplice in the first nine attacks and was released from prison in 2009.
