    Killing of Edward Hall and Eleanor Mills

    Episcopal priest Edward Wheeler Hall and choir member Eleanor Mills, with whom he was having an affair, were found shot to death in a New Jersey field in September 1922. Hall's wife and her two brothers were tried in 1926 and acquitted; the case remains legally unsolved.

    Braintree, Massachusetts, United States · 1927

    Sacco and Vanzetti

    Italian immigrant anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted in 1921 of murdering a guard and a paymaster during a 1920 Massachusetts payroll robbery; despite worldwide protest over alleged bias and disputed evidence, both were executed in 1927, and in 1977 the state proclaimed their trial unfair.

    Disappearance of Moncrieff and Hood

    Lieutenant John Moncrieff and Captain George Hood disappeared on 10 January 1928 while attempting the first trans-Tasman flight from Australia to New Zealand in their aircraft Aotearoa. Radio signals ceased after about 12 hours and, despite extensive searches over the following decades, no trace of the men or their plane has ever been found.

    Ruby, Arizona · 1920

    Ruby Murders

    Between 1920 and 1922, six people were killed in a series of robberies and manhunts centered on the Ruby Mercantile store near the border town of Ruby, Arizona, including two store owners, the wife of a second store owner, and two lawmen killed during a prisoner escape.

    Disappearance of Marvin Clark

    Marvin Clark, an elderly Tigard, Oregon man, vanished on October 30, 1926 while traveling to meet his daughter in Portland, and has never been definitively found, making his case the oldest active missing person case in the United States.

    Disappearance of Glen and Bessie Hyde

    Newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde vanished in November 1928 while attempting to run the Colorado River's rapids through the Grand Canyon; their scow was later found intact and adrift, but no trace of the couple was ever recovered.

    Disappearance of Pierre Quéméneur

    Breton wood merchant and politician Pierre Quéméneur vanished on a 1923 business trip from Brittany to Paris and was never found. His travelling companion, Guillaume Seznec, was convicted of his murder in 1924 despite the absence of a body, in a case that remains disputed a century later.

    86 Rochester Row, City of Westminster, London · 1927

    Charing Cross Trunk Murder

    In May 1927, the dismembered body of Minnie Alice Bonati was found in a trunk left at Charing Cross railway station's left-luggage office; estate agent John Robinson was convicted of her murder and hanged.

    Ivankovo, Sudislavsky District, Kostroma Governorate, RSFSR, Soviet Union · 1925

    Grachov murder case

    On 26 July 1925, Grigory Grachov set fire to houses in the village of Ivankovo, Soviet Union, then ambushed and shot villagers and firefighters who responded, killing 11 and wounding 8 before being captured.

    Killing of Morduch Halsman

    In 1928, 22-year-old Philippe Halsman was accused of killing his father, Morduch Halsman, a Latvian Jewish dentist, during a hike in Austria's Zillertal valley. His first conviction, widely criticized as a product of regional antisemitism, was overturned by Austria's Supreme Court; a second trial convicted him of manslaughter, and he was pardoned by the Austrian president in 1930.
