  Murder of Ahmaud Arbery

  On February 23, 2020, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was chased by three white men in trucks while jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborhood near Brunswick, Georgia, and was fatally shot by Travis McMichael after a struggle. No arrests were made for over two months until a video of the killing went viral, after which Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan were charged, tried, and convicted of murder and other crimes in state court, and later convicted of federal hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges.

  Murder of Blaze Bernstein

  Blaze Bernstein, a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student, was found stabbed to death in an Orange County, California park in January 2018 after disappearing during a visit home. His former high school classmate Samuel Woodward, linked to the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division, was convicted of the murder in July 2024 and sentenced to life without parole.

  Murder of Stephen Lawrence

  Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old Black British student, was fatally stabbed by a group of white youths in a racially motivated attack in Eltham, southeast London, on 22 April 1993. After nearly two decades of failed prosecutions and a landmark public inquiry into police racism, two of the attackers, Gary Dobson and David Norris, were convicted of his murder in January 2012 following new forensic evidence.

  Murder of Ross Parker

  Ross Parker, a 17-year-old from Peterborough, England, was stabbed, beaten with a hammer and kicked to death by a gang in a racially motivated attack on 21 September 2001. Three men were convicted of his murder in December 2002 and sentenced to life imprisonment; a fourth defendant was cleared.

  Murder of Daniel Zamudio

  Daniel Zamudio, a gay Chilean man, was beaten and tortured for hours in a Santiago park in March 2012 by four men linked to a neo-Nazi gang; he died of his injuries 25 days later, prompting Chile to pass a long-stalled anti-discrimination law.

  Disappearance of Tehuel de la Torre

  Tehuel de la Torre, a 21-year-old Argentine trans man, disappeared on 11 March 2021 after leaving his home in San Vicente, Buenos Aires, to meet a man who had offered him work as a waiter. His body has never been found. Luis Alberto Ramos was convicted of aggravated homicide motivated by hatred of gender identity and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2024; a co-accused, Oscar Alfredo Montes, faces a separate jury trial.

  Jasper, Texas, USA · 1998

  Murder of James Byrd Jr.

  James Byrd Jr., a 49-year-old Black man, was abducted and murdered in a racially motivated hate crime near Jasper, Texas, in June 1998; three white men were convicted, two of whom were later executed.

  Mobil gas station, Coney Island Avenue, Midwood, Brooklyn, New York · 2023

  Killing of O'Shae Sibley

  O'Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old gay dancer and choreographer, was fatally stabbed outside a Brooklyn gas station on July 29, 2023, after he and friends were confronted for playing music and voguing. A 17-year-old, Dmitry Popov, was later charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime and, in 2026, was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime but acquitted of murder.

  Chevron gas station, Mesa, Arizona · 2001

  Murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi

  Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh-American gas station owner in Mesa, Arizona, was fatally shot on September 15, 2001, by Frank Silva Roque, who mistook him for an Arab Muslim in a retaliatory hate crime following the September 11 attacks. Roque was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment.

  San Francisco, California, United States · 1973

  Zebra murders

  Between October 1973 and April 1974, a group calling itself the "Death Angels" killed at least fifteen white people and wounded eight others in racially motivated attacks across San Francisco, prompting a controversial police manhunt known as Operation Zebra and the eventual conviction of four men.
