    Thames Torso Murders

    Between 1887 and 1889, the dismembered remains of at least four women were recovered from the River Thames and nearby sites in London; only one victim was identified, and none of the murders were ever solved.

    West coast of Aceh, Sumatra (near Tenom) · 1883

    Nisero Incident

    In November 1883 the British cargo ship Nisero ran aground off the west coast of Aceh, Sumatra; its 28 crew were taken captive by the Raja of Tenom and held for ten months, with seven dying of cholera or malnutrition, before a ransom secured their release in September 1884.

    Mayerling incident

    Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary, 30, and his 17-year-old mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, were found dead on 30 January 1889 at the imperial hunting lodge in Mayerling, in what Austrian authorities announced as a murder-suicide pact -- an account historians and later forensic examinations never conclusively confirmed.

    On March 11, 1884, former lawmen Ben Thompson and King Fisher were shot dead in an ambush at the Jack Harris Vaudeville Saloon and Theater in San Antonio, Texas, an attack tied to lingering resentment over Thompson's 1882 killing of theater owner Jack Harris.
