    Murder of Ahmaud Arbery

    On February 23, 2020, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was chased by three white men in trucks while jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborhood near Brunswick, Georgia, and was fatally shot by Travis McMichael after a struggle. No arrests were made for over two months until a video of the killing went viral, after which Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan were charged, tried, and convicted of murder and other crimes in state court, and later convicted of federal hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges.

    Meredith Emerson, a 24-year-old University of Georgia graduate, was abducted while hiking on Blood Mountain in north Georgia on January 1, 2008, and killed by Gary Michael Hilton, a drifter who pleaded guilty and received a life sentence.

    Jarmecca "Nikki" Whitehead, a 34-year-old beautician, was found beaten and stabbed to death in her Conyers, Georgia home in January 2010. Her 16-year-old identical twin daughters were later charged with her murder and, in 2014, each pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, receiving 30-year sentences.

    Killing of Clarence Horatious Pickett

    Clarence Horatious Pickett, an African American preacher, died in December 1957 after being beaten by a police officer while in custody at a Columbus, Georgia city jail. The officer, Joseph Cameron, was acquitted by an all-white jury in 1958 despite expert testimony that the beating caused Pickett's death.

    Murder of Lemuel Penn

    Lemuel Penn, a Black U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and D.C. school administrator, was shot and killed on a Georgia bridge in 1964 while driving home from military training. Cecil Myers and Howard Sims were acquitted of Penn's murder in state court and were later convicted in federal court of a civil-rights conspiracy connected to his killing.

    Murder of Kyle Dinkheller

    On January 12, 1998, Vietnam veteran Andrew Brannan fatally shot 22-year-old Laurens County, Georgia, deputy sheriff Kyle Dinkheller during a traffic stop near Dudley, Georgia, in an incident captured on the deputy's dashboard camera. Brannan was convicted of murder in 2000 and executed in 2015.

    Death of Stacey English

    Stacey Nicole English, a 36-year-old Atlanta woman, was reported missing by her family on December 27, 2011, after last being seen at her home around Christmas Day. Her remains were found under a fallen tree on January 23, 2012, and the medical examiner ruled her death accidental, attributing it most likely to cold exposure complicated by underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders.
