    Murder of Sonya Massey

    On July 6, 2024, Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson fatally shot Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old unarmed Black woman, inside her Woodside Township, Illinois home after she called 911 about a possible prowler. Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2025 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

    Suicide of Joe Gliniewicz

    In September 2015, Fox Lake, Illinois police lieutenant Joe Gliniewicz was found dead in a marsh in what was initially believed to be a murder by three unknown assailants, triggering a massive manhunt. After a two-month investigation, officials concluded he had staged his death to look like a homicide but had in fact died by suicide after fearing exposure of years of embezzlement and other criminal conduct.

    Murder of Laquan McDonald

    On October 20, 2014, Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times as McDonald walked away from him. A dash-cam video of the shooting was withheld from the public for more than a year before a court ordered its release in November 2015, the same day Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder. In 2018 he was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery.
