On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and face-down, killing him; Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter, and three other officers were convicted of related charges.

On April 11, 2021, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was fatally shot in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, by police officer Kimberly Potter during a traffic stop, after Potter said she mistakenly fired her handgun instead of her Taser. Potter was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison.

Justine Damond, a 40-year-old Australian-American woman, was fatally shot by Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor in July 2017 after she called 911 to report a possible assault near her home. Noor was later convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter; the murder conviction was later overturned on appeal, and he was resentenced to a shorter term.

Plymouth Avenue North, Minneapolis, Minnesota · 2015
On November 15, 2015, Minneapolis police officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze fatally shot Jamar Clark, a 24-year-old Black man, during an encounter after a domestic dispute call. Clark died the next day; no criminal charges were filed against the officers, and Clark's family later reached a $200,000 civil settlement with the city.

On June 13, 2021, Deona Marie Knajdek was killed when a man drove a Jeep into a crowd of demonstrators blocking an intersection in Uptown Minneapolis during protests over the police killing of Winston Boogie Smith. The driver, Nicholas Kraus, later pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder and assault, and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Dolal Idd, a 23-year-old Somali-American man, was fatally shot by Minneapolis police officers on December 30, 2020, during a firearms sting operation after he shot at officers from inside his car. Dakota County prosecutors later concluded the officers' use of force was legally justified and filed no charges.

Brian Glick, a 21-year-old Subway employee, was beaten to death behind the Bloomington, Minnesota store where he worked during a robbery on October 25, 1993. Dennis Tate and Michael Olson, a former employee, both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

On July 6, 2016, St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Philando Castile, a 32-year-old Black school nutrition services supervisor, during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, after Castile disclosed he was carrying a licensed firearm. Yanez was charged with second-degree manslaughter but acquitted by a jury in June 2017.
