Lauren Spierer, a 20-year-old Indiana University student, disappeared in the early hours of June 3, 2011, after leaving a bar in Bloomington, Indiana. Despite an extensive investigation by Bloomington police, Indiana University police, and the FBI, she has never been found and is presumed dead. No one has been charged, and the case remains unsolved.

On February 26, 1901, a mob of over 1,000 white residents of Vigo County, Indiana, dragged George Ward, a Black man, from a jail cell in Terre Haute, beat him fatally, hanged him from a bridge, and burned his body; no one was ever charged in his death.

Carol Jenkins, a 21-year-old Black door-to-door encyclopedia saleswoman, was fatally stabbed in a racially motivated attack in Martinsville, Indiana, on September 16, 1968. The case went unsolved for over three decades until a tip from a witness's daughter led to the 2002 arrest of Kenneth Clay Richmond, who died before facing trial.

In October 1878, a white mob near Mount Vernon, Indiana, lynched seven Black men — Jim Good, Jeff Hopkins, Ed Warner, William Chambers, Dan Harris Sr., Dan Harris Jr., and John Harris — after they were accused of robbing a brothel. It remains the largest reported lynching in Indiana's history.

On July 17, 2022, a 20-year-old gunman opened fire in the food court of the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana, killing three people and wounding two before being fatally shot by an armed civilian bystander within about 15 seconds of the attack beginning.

Eli Ladd, a Black barber and farmer, was chased and fatally shot more than fifty times by a group of white men in Blountsville, Indiana, on February 7, 1890. Five men were arrested; three were convicted of manslaughter and served two-year prison sentences.

John Tucker, a free Black farmer, husband, and father, was beaten to death by three white men in front of a crowd in downtown Indianapolis on July 4, 1845. Two of the men were tried for his death; one was convicted of manslaughter and the other acquitted.

Bud Rowland and Jim Henderson, two Black men, were seized from jail and lynched by a white mob in Rockport, Indiana on December 16, 1900, after being accused of killing a white barber. The following day, John Rolla, also known as "Crowfoot," was lynched by a mob in Boonville, Indiana in connection with the same allegation.
