Gareth Williams, a GCHQ mathematician on secondment to MI6, was found dead padlocked inside a bag in his London flat in August 2010; a coroner ruled the death unnatural and likely criminally mediated, but no one has been charged and a Metropolitan Police re-investigation later called it probably an accident.

Claudia Lawrence, a 35-year-old chef at the University of York, disappeared after leaving work in Heworth, York, on 18 March 2009 and has never been found. North Yorkshire Police investigated her disappearance as a suspected murder for over a decade, arresting and releasing several people without charge, but no one has been convicted.

Damien Nettles, 16, vanished from Cowes on the Isle of Wight in the early hours of 2 November 1996 after a night out; despite multiple arrests over the years, no one has been charged and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Melanie Hall, a 25-year-old hospital clerical officer, disappeared after a night out at Cadillacs nightclub in Bath on 9 June 1996. Her partial remains were found in 2009 near the M5 motorway, showing signs of severe blunt trauma. Despite numerous arrests over the years, no one has been charged with her killing.

Julia Wallace was beaten to death in her Liverpool home in January 1931 after her husband William was lured away by a hoax phone call. He was convicted but the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the verdict months later, and the killing remains officially unsolved.

Elsie Frost, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, was fatally stabbed in a railway underpass near Wakefield in 1965; despite a massive manhunt no one was ever convicted, and a 2019 inquest posthumously named Peter Pickering as her killer.

Ruth Wilson, a 16-year-old sixth-form student from Betchworth, Surrey, disappeared on Box Hill on 27 November 1995 after being dropped off by taxi near the Hand in Hand pub. Farewell notes were later found near Betchworth Quarry, but no body was ever found and her fate remains unknown.

Mary Flanagan, a 16-year-old Tate & Lyle employee from West Ham, disappeared on 31 December 1959 after leaving her family home and being last seen near West Ham tube station. Her case remains unsolved and has been described as the Metropolitan Police's oldest open missing person case.
