    Death of Corrie McKeague

    Royal Air Force gunner Corrie McKeague disappeared after a night out in Bury St Edmunds in September 2016, and a 2022 inquest concluded he died after climbing into a waste bin that was tipped into a bin lorry, though his remains were never found.

    Death of Gareth Williams

    Gareth Williams, a GCHQ mathematician on secondment to MI6, was found dead padlocked inside a bag in his London flat in August 2010; a coroner ruled the death unnatural and likely criminally mediated, but no one has been charged and a Metropolitan Police re-investigation later called it probably an accident.

    Shepherd's Bush murders

    On 12 August 1966, three London police officers were shot dead in Braybrook Street, Shepherd's Bush, after stopping a car to question its occupants. Harry Roberts, John Duddy and John Witney were convicted of the murders and sentenced to life imprisonment.

    Planning officer Harry Collinson was shot dead on camera by landowner Albert Dryden during a property dispute in County Durham in 1991; Dryden was convicted of murder in 1992 and died in 2018 after compassionate release.

    Murder of Kathleen Grundy and Other Patients by Harold Shipman

    Harold Shipman, a GP in Hyde, Greater Manchester, was convicted in January 2000 of murdering 15 patients, including former mayoress Kathleen Grundy, using lethal doses of diamorphine. A subsequent public inquiry concluded he had killed at least 218 patients over roughly 27 years, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in modern history.

    Murder of Sophie Lancaster

    Sophie Lancaster, 20, was beaten into a coma alongside her boyfriend Robert Maltby by a group of teenagers in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, on 11 August 2007, reportedly because the couple were dressed as goths. She died of her injuries thirteen days later; two of the attackers were convicted of her murder.

    Grand Hotel, Brighton, England · 1984

    Brighton hotel bombing

    On 12 October 1984 the IRA detonated a long-delay bomb at the Grand Hotel in Brighton in an attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet during the Conservative Party Conference. Five people were killed and more than thirty injured; Thatcher was uninjured. IRA member Patrick Magee was convicted in 1986 and sentenced to eight concurrent life terms.
